J.K. Rowling: More than Just Harry Potter
British writer and author, J.K Rowling, has more to offer than all of her 7 Harry Potter books.
Most of Rowling’s fans know that the idea for Harry Potter was conceived during a train ride to London; and most are familiar with her “rags-to-riches” life story. What most people do not know is that Rowling has been actively doing philanthropic work for years now.
Rowling established Volant Charitable Trust and the Children’s High Level Group in order to assist various women and children’s needs, and to fight against poverty and social inequality. She raised £ 1.95 million for the group by selling a series of fairy tales referred to in the 7th Harry Potter book. She contributed a Harry Potter prequel for an A5 story card to be auctioned in book form this August in aid of various charities.
The author actively supports the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Great Britain and helped raise $20 million for Comic Relief in aid of the International Fund for Children and Young People. A book of children’s stories she wrote supports the charity closest to her heart; One Parent Families, of which she is the President.
What makes Rowling different from other multi-millionaire authors is that she knows how to use her talents well, and she uses them not just for her own sake, but more for the benefit of others. And that’s why she continues to earn praises from millions of young readers around the world.
